Wednesday Addams Will Have Psychic Abilities In Tim Burton's Netflix TV Series

Here's everything we know so far.

Tim Burton’s live-action The Addams Family spinoff is finally official. The 62-year-old filmmaker's TV directorial debut will focus on one family member in particular: the iconic character of the death-obsessed, dark-yet-somehow-delightful Wednesday Addams. The 8-episode series will focus on her time as a student at Nevermore Academy. And guess what? She's going to have psychic abilities in this one! Said to be a coming-of-age comedy, the TV show will be written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and directed by Burton. “Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore,” according to a press release, reports Rolling Stone.

“When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday we were struck, like an arrow from a crossbow, right in our hearts,” said Netflix executive Teddy Biaselli in a press release, as per Gizmodo. “They nailed the tone, the spirit, and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story. We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series. Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deetz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy. As Wednesday stans, my team and I feel an inherent responsibility to get this one-of-a-kind character right for both old fans and new. We’re confident this talented group will do her justice as she prepares for the dreaded underworld known as adulthood."

Wednesday Addams was most memorably played by Christina Ricci who played the youngster in The Addams Family in 1991 and sequel Addams Family Values in 1993. She was barely 10 years old at the time! “Those movies have clearly had the biggest impact on my career and life,” Ricci said, according to Bustle. “I spent a lot of my childhood working on them and promoting them, and I’ve spent the rest of my life talking about them! So both of the Addams Family movies, they’re huge in my history.” Ricci also pointed out how she feels “bound” to the character. “I feel very inextricably bound to her, because I feel, like, who can say how much influence being that person at that age for the amount of time that I was her, the amount of positive reinforcement from playing that character,” she added. It'll be interesting to see how Tim Burton will develop Wednesday's one-of-a-kind character. He's familiar with oddballs and outcasts and working with dark comedic themes, so we can't wait to see what he comes up with it!
