A New Johnny Depp Movie Is Coming Next Month, But It Will Skip Theaters

Check out the trailer if you haven't already.

With the Coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc all over the world, one industry that has suffered a lot is the entertainment industry. Movies and shows that were in between productions have shut down, whereas the ones who wrapped up post-production are either pushing back their release date indefinitely (like Christopher Nolan's Tenet) or they are releasing the movies on the OTT platforms.

One such movie that is moving away from a theatrical release and going straight to streaming platform is the colonial drama starring Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Mark Rylance. Titled Waiting for the Barbarians, it will see Depp's return after his career took a severe hit following the divorce trial involving his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Both Depp and Pattinson are Hollywood A-listers and Rylance is known as one of the best actors in the present day. So it is surprising for fans that a big-budget period piece is going to be released straight-to-VOD on August 7, reported We Got This Covered. The movie is directed by acclaimed Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra and the story is based on a novel by J.M. Coetzee of the same name. It also marks Guerra's English-language directorial debut.

The movie tells the story of an unnamed magistrate who lives in a colonial outpost of a large empire and starts questioning where his loyalties lie after the sinister Colonel Joll arrives, played by Depp. Rylance will play the magistrate's role who is looking for an easy retirement. But, soon enough, the peace and quiet of the place go for a toss when rumors start that the indigenous people of the area, called the Barbarians by the colonists, might be preparing to attack the town.

Keeping these rumors in mind, the regime deploys the army in the town and they begin to ruthlessly interrogate the indigenous people after capturing them. In fact, some of their methods were so brutal that many captors died while being interrogated. Apart from Depp, Pattinson, and Rylance, the period drama also stars Greta Scacchi, David Dencik, Sam Reid Bill Milner, Harry Melling, and Gana Bayarsaikhan as the character known as The Girl, a Barbarian girl who gets nursed back to health by the Magistrate.

Rylance, before making his entry into mainstream Hollywood enjoyed a lot of success in the theater world. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 2016's Bridge Of Spies. During his illustrious career, Depp has been nominated for three best actor Academy awards. Guerra is best known for directing and co-writing the 2015 film Embrace of the Serpent, and the movie also earned the nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.

Waiting for the Barbarians premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was also screened at London Film Festival in 2019.

So why is the movie is heading to VOD? Obviously because of the pandemic that's still raging all over the world and it has shut down most of the domestic theaters. Although a lot of movies have been postponed indefinitely, it looks like the studio didn't want to release the movie in theaters and thought its a good idea to release it on streaming platforms instead.
