Jason Momoa Is Starring In A New Netflix Adventure Movie, Here's The First Look

The Aquaman star plays an eccentric outlaw in this fantasy adventure alongside Marlow Barkley.

Netflix is certainly making itself very busy this year, with numerous titles in production. The online streaming giant has just revealed the first look of the upcoming Jason Momoa movie Slumberland. "No, you’re not dreaming – that’s Jason Momoa with a full set of horns," Netflix tweeted, along with two images. "Here's a sneak peek behind the scenes at SLUMBERLAND, a new adventure story about an eccentric outlaw (Momoa) who guides a young hero (Marlow Barkley) through a secret dreamworld."

Among the photos is a flamboyant Momoa decked in a top hat as he glances out of a wooden closet. Another photo shows Momoa's co-star Barkley hiding behind a car with looks of concern on their faces. So the plot of the movie is said to be centered around Barkley's character, who happens to discover a secret map to the dreamworld of Slumberland. She meets Momoa on the way, as she traverses through dreams and escapes from nightmares. The purpose of her mission is to somehow reunite with her late father again.

The upcoming movie is based on the comic book series Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay. Slumberland also has Weruche Opia, India de Beaufort, Kyle Chandler, and Chris O'Dowd starring in it. The cast and crew are still in the process of filming in a Toronto location. The movie is being directed by Francis Lawrence, who had previously spearheaded the Jennifer Lawrence-led spy thriller Red Sparrow. He also collaborated with her in three of the four Hunger Games movies, much to his credit. Going further back, his directorial filmography includes the blockbuster post-apocalyptic action movie I Am Legend featuring Will Smith.

Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping serve as producers for Slumberland. Their previous productions include the sports drama Ford v. Ferrari, fantasy flick Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and historical drama Hidden Figures, as well as collaborating with Lawrence on Red Sparrow. We don't have an exact release date for Slumberland just yet, but it's not expected to release this year and may very well be in 2022.

Momoa is working on this film fresh after his role in Zack Snyder's Justice League. He is also set to appear in the science-fiction epic Dune, which is due to release in October. Furthermore, he is also returning as the lead role in Aquaman 2, which is set to begin filming over the summer. Indeed, the Hawaiian actor has come a long way from first making it big playing the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in the first season of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones.

The original comic series, Little Nemo in Slumberland first appeared in the New York Herald and ran from October 15, 1905, for several years until July 23, 1911. The strip was later renamed In the Land of Wonderful Dreams when McCay approached William Randolph Hearst's New York American. It ran on that paper from September 3, 1911, until July 26, 1914. McCay would later return to the Herald in 1924 where he revived the strip under its original title from August 3, 1924, until January 9, 1927.
