Toby's dad Brian Froud is actually one of the best puppeteers and has passed on his skills to his son.
Toby from the movie Labyrinth was an unforgettable character. The cute baby wearing the striped pyjamas ends up sweeping away Jareth the Goblin King, played by the late David Bowie. Fast forward over three decades and you have Toby Froud going back to his roots and working with the Jim Henson Company, this time within the puppeteering world.
You will find his work in the Netflix series 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.'. Toby's father Brian Froud is actually one of the greatest in puppetry and had worked with David Bowie in 1986. It now seems like his son has inherited his fine skills and gives more credence to the saying "Like father, like son."
So the little boy, now grown up, works as a full-time animator and puppeteer. He has contributed to several films like King Kong, ParaNorman, Kubo, and the Two Strings. In an earlier interview with Vice back in 2016, Toby had said: "It was really being in the right place at the right time. My father, having done The Dark Crystal [where he also met] my mother, in talking with Jim [Henson], they decided to do another film, which turned out to be Labyrinth. My father created the baby and the goblins painting, [which] was the first true concept for the film."

"He did that six months to a year before I was even conceived. He always felt that he was painting on sort of a cosmic level, because it turned out that it looked like me in the end. And then I was born, but because my father was designing the film and my mother was working on it, I was always around the workshop with them. I was used to the puppets—I loved the goblins and squishing their noses, and I knew the people there as well, and it sort of transpired that I was the right age to be the baby."
Needless to say, he was immediately chosen to work for the 'Dark Crystal' series and you will not believe how amazing the voice cast is. You will find big names such as Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones voicing for Rian, Brea, and Deet, the three Galfing heroes, respectively. Aside from that, Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander will also be lending their voices to our beloved characters from the show.
“To match the stunning visual world of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, we knew we had to entice some incredible voice talent to add dimension to the exquisite artistry of the puppeteers who bring the characters to life,” Netflix VP of Original Series was earlier quoted as saying by Radio Times. “I am proud to say that this may be one of the finest casts assembled from the world’s favorite TV shows and movies, and I am now even more excited for fans to come back to Thra with us, and for new viewers to discover this world for the very first time,” she added.
