You Can Plant These Gorgeous Flowers That Look Like Flames When They Bloom

It's as if the petals are on fire.

Special flowers are always a thing of beauty. Wait, that's not quite right, all flowers are lovely to look at and smell, but some really do take the cake. This is one of the best-looking flowers you would have ever come across in your life. This fiery and alluring flower is called the Gloriosa Flame Lily and we just can't stop gazing at it. The full name of the flower is Gloriosa superba and it has petals that resemble beautiful flickering flames. Some other names for the flower are glory lily, fire lily, flame lily, climbing lily, creeping lily, and cat’s claw or tiger’s claw.

This plant is typically found in several parts of Asia including China and India. However, it originally comes from southern Africa and is a perennial plant that grows well in mild climates. Although it's referred to as a lily in several of its names, it's not a true lily. What's more interesting is that the Gloriosa Flame Lily can somehow grow in several varying habitats. According to Totally The Bomb, it can grow in forests, thickets, grasslands, sand dunes, and other nutrient-poor soils.

Beware though, this creeping lily is actually a poisonous plant that can be fatal to humans and animals if you consume enough of it. Within a few hours of ingestion, a person may experience nausea, vomiting, numbness, and tingling around the mouth, burning in the throat, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea, which leads to dehydration.

That being said, the Gloriosa superba has been used in very low doses as a medicinal plant.  It has been used as a laxative, an alexiteric, and also in the treatment of gout, infertility, open wounds, snakebite, ulcers, arthritis, cholera etc. Checking out its cultural aspect, we find that the Gloriosa Flame Lily is the national flower of Zimbabwe. In several places, it is considered a weed by the local populace. It is also said to be quite easy to grow this, making it an easy choice in gardens. In many African countries, these flowers are also part of religious rituals.
