The classic game show has reportedly caught the eye of both traditional broadcasters and streamers, with everyone looking to get their hands on the cult favorite's reboot.
If you've been looking for a reason to shop, we've got the perfect one for you. The classic game show Supermarket Sweep is coming back to TV and it's like all our grocery store dreams have come true. As some of you might remember, the show originally aired on ABC from 1965 through 1967 and was later revived on Lifetime from 1990-1995 and PAX (now Ion Television) from 2000-2003. Although no network is attached to the latest revival as of now, given the cult status of the show, there's sure to be one heck of a bidding war between both traditional broadcasters and streamers to bag the deal.

According to E! News, the exciting announcement about the show's return from the grave was announced by FremantleMedia. Vasha Wallace, Fremantle's EVP of Global Acquisitions and Development said in a statement, "The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favorite game show which has traveled with such success over the years. Now, modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st-century audience. It is a great addition to this year's MIPCOM slate and given the interest we've had already we're confident that everyone will be as excited for its return as we are."

The show creator Al Howard's son Henry added, "In Supermarket Sweep, one lucky team tries for the bonus money, but on this show, there are no losers—only shoppers having a great time. I'm delighted that Fremantle has made the exciting decision to bring back this classic game show, and I look forward to working with their talented teams around the world. In honor of Supermarket Sweep's return... I believe I'll go shopping!"

In case you've been living in a cave for the entirety of your life and therefore have no clue what Supermarket Sweep actually is, allow me to enlighten you. The unique format of the show masterfully combined the age-old quiz show with an intense race against time set inside an actual supermarket, where the winning team is determined by the value of the items they collect in their shopping cart. That is, the team that has the most valuable items in their cart when the timer runs out, wins. As simple and entertaining as that. You can now see how the show gained so much popularity, can't you?

Apart from the obvious excitement about getting to see people shop like maniacs and actually walk away with money, the news of the show's return is made even sweeter by the addition of an incredible artist to the crew. According to a report by Deadline, the reboot of Supermarket Sweep will be hosted by none other than Leslie Jones, who recently announced her departure from Saturday Night Live after 5 illustrious seasons. Jones is also set to executive produce the classic TV game show, which has apparently already seen a lot of interest from network and streaming giants of the likes of ABC, NBC, Fox, and Netflix. The actress-comedian is also said to have played a big part in bringing the show back, so I guess we know who to thank now.
