Steve Irwin’s Parents Find Heartbreaking Letter He Wrote To Them In 1994

Steve's father, Bob, found a handwritten letter from his son when it fell out of one of the pages of a book. The letter was addressed to him and his wife.

Steve Irwin as The Crocodile Hunter was a treasure to nature documentary television. We got to learn so much about wildlife and experience the thrill of crocodile wrestling from the comfort of our home, while Irwin did all the work. Even after his untimely demise, he is still giving back to nature and animals through Australia Zoo. Irwin died in September 2006 after he was stabbed by a stingray barb in the chest. He was only 44-year-old. He may have passed away, but his enthusiastic spirit lives on. So much so that his father, Bob, found a letter written by his son in 1994, years after his death.

Bob revealed that one day, back in 2016, as he was reading a book, a letter fell out of the book. Much to his surprise, it was a handwritten letter from their son that he had penned more than 12 years ago. Irwin was 32 then and had written the letter to express gratitude to his parents, Bob and Lyn. The letter also made its way into Bob’s memoir, The Last Crocodile Hunter: A Father and Son Legacy, where it can be found in its entirety, according to Global News. The book was written to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his son’s death.

In the letter that was found, Irwin addressed his parents and wrote, "Probably one of the most unfortunate things in a ‘Bloke’s Life’ is that it takes over 30 years to realize how essential you have been to build my character, my ethics and, most importantly, my HAPPINESS." He went on to write, "At 32, I am finally starting to figure it out. In good times and in bad, you were there. Your strength and endurance to raise me will not go unrewarded. My love for you is my strength! For the rest of my life, I will reflect on the unbelievably GREAT times we’ve shared and will continue to share. You’re my best friends!" He signed off with, "Thank you, Steve."

On the envelope in which the letter was found, Irwin had written, "Please be happy to know that your strength and wisdom have been passed on." The heart-wrenching letter was a message from Irwin who continues to inspire even after he passed away. He is survived by his wife and two children, who have been doing tremendous work in carrying forward his legacy. The Australia Zoo, which the trio runs, played a huge role in saving and treating wildlife during the Australian bushfires that ravaged the island nation. They single-handedly managed to treat over 90,000 wounded animals at the time.

His daughter, Bindi Irwin, 21, married her longtime boyfriend Chandler Powell on March 25 this year. On the occasion of what would have been her father's 58th birthday, she paid an emotional tribute to him on Instagram and wrote: Dad, Today is your birthday. I had an extra-strong cup of tea just how you liked it. I hugged Mum for you and told her how much we love her. Robert and I went on a hike through the mountains you cherished. I watched one of your documentaries with Chandler and shared stories about you. I walked through your office in the zoo and smiled at our old family photographs. Today and every day I miss you and love you beyond description. You’re always with me.
