Steve Irwin's Family Open An Elephant Hospital, Making His Lifelong Dream Come True

Steve Irwin tragically passed away in 2006, and never got to see his wish being fulfilled. Yet, his family never gave up on his dreams.

Australia's crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin's most cherished wish was to open an elephant hospital in Indonesia. Tragically, he passed away in 2006, and never got to see his dream being fulfilled.  Yet, his family never gave up on his dreams. His wife Terri Irwin revealed that the family's zoo had just officially finished work on an elephant hospital in Sumatra, Indonesia, thus carrying his legacy forward.

Terri said, "We just — just — finished one of his greatest goals which was to open an elephant hospital in Indonesia. In Sumatra, when elephants step on a landmine or they get caught in a snare there was no hospital to treat them, and we now have just opened an elephant hospital, so it's pretty special. These are the things we talk about and it's so important to continue his mission." Additionally, the Australia Zoo in Queensland too confirmed that they were able to construct a hospital and staff accommodation to help the critically endangered Sumatran elephant.

The status of Sumatran elephants was changed from an endangered animal to critically endangered in 2012. Presently, it is estimated that there are only between 2,400-2,800 Sumatran elephants left. The WWF Website also stated that the Sumatran elephant population had declined drastically over the last 25 years, primarily due to deforestation, illegal poaching, and human retaliation.

The Australian Zoo was the brainchild of Steve and Terri Irwin, but sadly, Steve was killed more than a decade ago after a stingray pierced his chest with its barbed tail. Since his tragic death, Terri, along with her two children Robert and Bindi Irwin have taken forward the work of Steve Irwin in terms of animal conservation efforts, not only in Australia but all over the world.

The Irwin family has also released a TV series called Crikey! It's the Irwins and it airs on Animal Planet. In July 2019, Bindi Irwin announced her engagement to American pro wakeboarder Chandler Powell. The couple has been together for six years and they plan on having their wedding at the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
