Darren Lynn Bousman, one of the original writers and directors of the franchise, is returning to direct the movie.
Thought the 2017 Jigsaw would be the last in the franchise? Well, you were wrong! The games are ready to begin once again only this time, without Tobin Bell and some forced humor as famous comedian Chris Rock is going to be one of the lead actors in the movie.
And, there's more. According to BloodyDisgusting, the ninth SAW movie is going to be a reimagining of the series which will change things up and also star Glass, Pulp Fiction, Snakes on a Plane, Deep Blue Sea, 1408 star Samuel L. Jackson.
The movie is being developed under the working title of 'The Organ Donor', aiming for a 2020 October release. Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed SAW II-IV is returning to work on the weird reboot-sequel based on a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger from a story created by Chris Rock.
In addition to Rock and Samuel, Max Minghella of The Social Network and Marisol Nichols of Riverdale will also be seen in the movie.
According to reports, the movie has already begun production in Toronto and will go on till September. We have some plot details too and they are nothing like the usual SAW movies. In the ninth film, Rock is playing a police detective who will investigate brutal murders and in case you thought Jackson will play Jigsaw, I'm sorry to burst your bubble but Variety has revealed he is going to play Chris' dad. YIKES!
“We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the ‘Saw’ canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of ‘Saw’ on full tilt,” said Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in. SAW is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous SAW films." I HIGHLY doubt that, but sure.
Chris posted an update on his Instagram, too, “The new Saw movie will have elements of humor but we’re not making Scary Movie or anything like that. It’s going to be Saw, OK. Don’t worry.”
So with these big guys playing positive roles, the question arises, who is playing Jigsaw? Well, it looks like he may not be in the movie AT ALL! The upcoming SAW movie is neither a proper reboot nor a direct sequel to Jigsaw, it's simply the ninth movie, according to the director.
"I can say with pretty much certainly that our new film will NOT be called Jigsaw 2. But I don't make the decisions, so who knows. But it's NOT a sequel to Jigsaw. It's DEFINITELY in the timeline of ALL the films though, [sic]" Josh tweeted and nobody is aware what these people are doing with the precious franchise Wan and Leigh created back in 2004.
Even though nobody is talking about Tobin Bell, I'm just gonna put this here - there were reports last year that Tobin amidst his divorce with his wife listed Saw 9 as a source of his income, which sparked a buzz online and served as a confirmation that a ninth movie may be happening after all.
According to The Blast, the divorce agreement was leaked which basically says that Tobin has to reimburse Elizabeth for the money he makes from the movie. But then again, nothing is confirmed officially when it comes to Bell. Will you be watching a SAW movie without Jigsaw in it? We might just sit this one out.
