In Stine's version, the Garbage Pail Kids are described as gross, weird, and strange, but not bad children. The latest book will welcome Adam Bomb, Brainy Janie, Junkfood John, and Nervous Rex, and will follow their unique journey of battling bullies and the prefects, who are their archenemies. The official rundown for the book reads, "Welcome to the town of Smellville, where nine kids all live in a big tumbledown house and have as much fun as they possibly can."
It continues, "People may think that they’re gross and weird and strange, but they’re not bad kids—they just don’t know any better. In this hilarious new series from bestselling author R. L. Stine, the Garbage Pail Kids—from Adam Bomb to Brainy Janie—get into mischief at their middle school, all while battling bullies and their archenemies, Penny and Parker Perfect. These all-new illustrated stories are sure to amuse, entertain, and blow away readers of all ages. Bonus: includes four exclusive Garbage Pail Kids stickers!"
The Garbage Pail Kids was first launched in 1985 as collectible sticker cards. Since then, the franchise has grown to be ever more popular and at present, includes merchandise such as T-shirts, toys, mobile, and board games, and more. Stine, in a statement, said, "The Garbage Pail Kids are ghastly, loud, messy, out of control . . . out of their minds. In other words, MY kind of kids! I’m hoping to create a book series that captures all the loopy slapstick fun of these uniquely awful characters, to get all middle-grade kids reading — and laughing.”
The cover art of the book will be handled by Joe Simko and interior illustrations will be done by Jeff Zapata. Both Simko and Zapata were the mainstay artists for the Garbage Pail Kids brand. The cover art and the sticker card collection, named R.L. Slime, will be released on October 6, 2020. Garbage Pail Kids #1: Welcome to Smellville is also available for pre-order.
