It's Official: Neve Campbell Is Returning As Sidney Prescott For 'Scream 5'

Along with Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are also reprising their roles.

Neve Campbell, the leading lady of the Scream franchise, confirmed she is returning for Scream 5 and we are absolutely delighted about this development. The news was confirmed by Campbell via an Instagram post where she mentioned she will be reprising her role in the fifth installment of the slasher/horror franchise. A new reboot movie for the Scream franchise was announced in March and The Hollywood Reporter reported that Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Ready or Not fame will be helming the project.

Taking to Instagram, Campbell wrote, "Hello again, Sidney… #ImBack @ScreamMovies." The actress also released a statement, saying, "I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro." The official Twitter account of Scream also confirmed the news, writing, "Hello, Sidney… It’s OFFICIAL: The original Scream queen Neve Campbell is back." Campbell has played the role of Sidney Prescott in all four previous Scream movies directed by the late Wes Craven. Almost a decade has passed since Scream 4 released back in 2011 and the audience is waiting with bated breath to see Ghostface carrying about his usual antics once again. Undoubtedly, it has been a long wait for the fans but their wish has finally come true.

Back in May, Campbell, in an interview with Entertainment Online said, "The conversations are being had, that's for sure. There was a lot of talk about it. I wasn't sure it was going to happen. ...We're starting conversations, we're starting negotiations." The actress also added that the directors of the movie have an immense amount of respect for Wes Craven. She said, "They really want to honor his work. So that's really lovely.

Before the news of her return was confirmed, Campbell, in another interview with Rotten Tomatoes, said, "I have been approached about it. The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out... We’re negotiating, so we’ll see. The two directors wrote me a very touching letter about Wes Craven and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honor him, and that meant a great, great deal to me. Hopefully, we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it.

With the Scream franchise, Craven had created a horror masterpiece and paved the way for the slasher genre. Indeed, Campbell's portrayal of Sidney Prescott gave the movie a major boost. Not only is Scream 5 going to feature Campbell, but Courteney Cox and David Arquette are also reprising their roles as reporter Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley respectively, along with Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, and Jenna Ortega.

The plot details of the movie are being kept under wraps. All we know is that it will follow the story of a woman returning to her hometown when a string of vicious crimes start happening. More information will be revealed as the film draws closer, but we have a pretty long wait in front of us. Scream 5 is all set to hit the theaters on January 14, 2022.
