It's Official: 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Is Coming To Broadway As A Musical

One of the best comedy movies of all time, Robin Williams' 'Mrs. Doubtfire' is now being adapted into a musical.

I think we all can agree that Mrs. Doubtfire was and still is one of those very special movies which brings the whole family together for a good laugh. Starring big names like Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, and Robert Prosky, the movie based on the best selling novel by Anne Fine was a MAJOR success and one of the best performing movies of the year 1993, earning over $441.3 million across the globe. Even after 26 years of its release, the movie remains to be a national treasure and its popularity hasn't aged a day. Do you know what happens to classics like that? They get adapted into Broadway musicals.

Yes, Mrs. Doubtfire is now coming to Broadway as a musical and we can't keep calm! According to Playbill, four-time Tony Award-winning Jerry Zaks of Hello, Dolly! is directing the musical show and the script of the same will be penned by celebrated writers of Something Rotten! John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick. Kevin McCollum will be producing the upcoming Broadway adaptation of one of the best comedy movies ever made.

“Mrs. Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving. Getting this team together and crafting Mrs. Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can’t wait to get into production," McCollum and Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions said in a joint statement. As far as the cast of the musical is concerned, the casting crew did a bang up job and got all your favorites.

Rob McClure, who is currently playing Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice musical, Kate Baldwin of Hello, Dolly!, Michael James Scott, the current genie in Aladdin, Dear Evan Hansen's Mallory Bechtel, Cameron Adams, Peter Bartlett, Tracee Beazer, Catherine Brunell, Nick Rashad Burroughs, and Mario Cantone are confirmed to be a part of the musical so far. The musical is scheduled for an industry reading this May 16th and 17th but the date of its official release is yet to be revealed.

Another classic coming to Broadway which has us super excited is The Princess Bride. Starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest, The Princess Bride is another gem we can never get over. Based on a novel of the same name by William Goldman, the movie released in 1987, painted a story of a farmhand Westley who tries to rescue his one true love Princess Buttercup from the odious Prince Humperdinck.

According to Deadline, Disney's Princess Bride is now being adapted into a Broadway musical after years and the development has already begun. Composer and lyricist David Yazbek (of MORE and The Band's Visit fame), as well as writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice, are on board and we can't wait to see what they are working on! Disney Theatrical Productions has confirmed that a team has been recruited and the production of the musical is in early stages.

And, the creatives they've picked are such renowned names. Yazbek won a Tony winner for The Band’s Visit, the Broadway hit which will close this April 7, and his Tootsie is currently showing at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre for an April 23 opening. Writers Martin and Elice too have shows on Broadway. The late author of the novel, Goldman, also wished to get the story on stage and tried several times and the project could never move forward due to financial issues but we're glad it is finally happening! Which musical are you most stoked for?
