Some reports even suggested that Lin-Manuel Miranda met with Walt Disney executives to talk about a possible sequel with our favorite Polynesian princess.
Since Moana was a huge success for Disney when it released in 2016, fans have wished and hoped for a sequel for some time now. It was a critically acclaimed movie in which Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho lent their voices for the lead roles. The movie earned a lot of accolades thanks to its powerful music numbers and gripping storyline. It grossed $643 million worldwide and won two Academy Awards nominations. Going by the success of Moana, it really seems like a bit of a surprise that we haven't had a sequel already.
However, all hope is not lost and after four long years, Disney is reportedly in the process of developing a sequel, as reported by We Got This Covered. And to add to that, another report by ScreenRant noted that Lin-Manuel Miranda even met with Walt Disney executives to talk about a possible sequel with our favorite Polynesian princess. We don't know much details about the potential sequel as of now but WGTC sources say that the movie is definitely in the works. They also mentioned that both Johnson and Cravalho will be back to reprise their roles.
For a quick recap, Moana follows the story of a young Polynesian girl who is selected by the ocean and is tasked with finding a demigod named Maui and return a mystical relic to its rightful owner, goddess Te Fiti. Moana is the daughter of the chief of a Polynesian village and she is very strong and determined. She does not let destiny control her and rather takes control of it on her own. When wildfires start killing people on their island, Moana, against her father's wishes, sets sail in search of Maui in an attempt to find the relic and save her people back home.
At the end of the first movie, the audience cried tears of joy when they see Moana come back home after an epic adventure and if the sequel really is happening, the movie could pick up from there.
While it might have taken more than four years to reportedly come up with a sequel, a long gap between two movies is a pretty common occurrence. It took six years for viewers to see Frozen 2, Zootopia released the same year as Moana and it is also reportedly getting a sequel. Sadly, Walt Disney has not confirmed themselves that Moana sequel is in the works as of now.
Walt Disney Animation Studio has a history of focusing on producing original animated features over sequels, but they have shown some flexibility towards this approach. We have even seen sequels like Ralph Breaks The Internet. While fans of the movie might be disappointed as there is no official confirmation as of now, but keep an eye out for this space as we will update it as soon as something official is announced.
