Mel Gibson To Play A 'Rogue, Unorthodox' Santa Claus In New Christmas Comedy 'Fatman'

The movie is scheduled to release next year in Canada and the domestic and international rights for the film will be up for sale in Cannes, the world’s largest film market.

Ho ho ho, guess who is playing Santa Claus? It's er, Mel Gibson. It's our very own 'Braveheart' who is all set to play a rowdy Santa Claus in a dark comic Christmas movie titled 'Fatman', reports Variety.

The film focuses on a spoilt kid who hires a hitman to kill the famously festive resident from Lapland. Gibson will be playing the unorthodox  Santa Claus who has to fight to keep his business alive. Meanwhile, this is followed by the 12-year-old who wants to kill Santa for receiving a lump of coal in his stocking.

The independent action comedy feature film will be directed by Ian and Eshom Nelms, who previously helmed 'Small Town Crime,' 'Waffle Street,' and 'Lost on Purpose'. It will be produced by Brandon James of Rough House, Nadine de Barros (JT Leroy) of Fortitude and Lisa Wolofsky (White Crow) of Skywolf.

"I am excited to be working with the incredibly talented Nelms Brothers who have written a unique, highly entertaining script," de Barros told Hollywood Reporter. "Mel is the perfect choice as Kris Kringle like we've never seen him before. I couldn't be more thrilled to watch this darkly comedic Christmas film come to life."

If you can recall, Gibson made his last appearance in “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Dragged Across Concrete.” Gibson was also nominated for best director at the Academy Award in 2017 for “Hacksaw Ridge”.

Daddy's Home 2 is the sequel to Daddy's Home that focused on Will Ferrell vying for the attention of his wife's (Linda Cardellini) children when their biological father (Mark Wahlberg) returns. The official synopsis of the second installment reads:

"Father and stepfather Dusty and Brad join forces to make Christmastime perfect for the children. Their newfound partnership soon gets put to the test when Dusty's old-school, macho dad and Brad's gentle father arrive to turn the holiday upside down. After a sudden change in plans, the four men decide to take the kids to a luxury resort for a fun-filled getaway that turns into a hilarious and chaotic adventure."

Ever since fans got to know that Mel Gibson is playing Santa Claus, they have shared their views over this portrayal. "Is this Santa a raging racist and mysogynist? That’s pretty unorthodox, and he would have to act too hard," a Twitter user said.

Meanwhile, another added, "He does great work both as actor and director. Loved Dragged Across Concrete last week." A third added, "Love this man. Mad Max and Lethal Weapons are a favorite of mine"

Now we are not sure how Gibson would fare as Santa Claus but one thing is certain -- we can't wait to see what's in store for us!
