Meghan Markle pays sweet tribute to iconic photographer Peter Lindbergh

The legendary photographer, who passed away at 74, popularized the idea of the supermodel with his iconic photoshoots in the 90s.

Legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh, the German icon who photographed '90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista as well as important public figures like Greta Thunberg, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, actor Salma Hayek Pinault, has passed away at 74.

His passing was announced on his Instagram page.

Lindbergh is credited with creating the concept of the supermodel by photographing some of the most iconic women of the 90s. One of his subjects, model Claudia Schiffer, wrote "Peter grew up not that far from me in Germany. We understood each other immediately. His contrast photography, black and white pictures often reminded me of the Ruhrpott area. He was an amazing family man, always positive and gentle," Schiffer continued. "Never played games -- he was straightforward and honest. He loved women and made everyone look beautiful. I will miss him."

Born in Leszno, Poland in 1944, Lindbergh grew up in Duisburg, Germany. He opened his first studio in Dusseldorf in 1973, before moving to Paris to work for Vogue. Lindbergh was known for his black and white photography and his preference that his models don't use make up or use photo retouching. "When you look in the magazines, the women have no experiences or any marks of a past or of anything...and they are totally wiped out and washed out and I think that's insane," he said. "That dream of perfection and that dream of forever young is a ridiculous thought."

One of his biggest recent subjects that Lindbergh has worked with is Meghan Markle, who was guest editing. British Vogue Forces for Change issue. On the SussexRoyal Instagram, Markle shared a photo of the two of them with the following caption:

Honoring the life and work of photographer Peter Lindbergh. His work is revered globally for capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup.

The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited. There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life.

“Forces for Change” was the one of the esteemed photographer’s final published projects. He will be deeply missed.
