The celebrity cat with a droopy-tongue face managed to win millions of hearts. Lil Bub has passed away after battling a bone infection.
Lil Bub, one of the most famous celebrity cats on Instagram, has sadly passed away at the age of eight, reports CNN.
Her owner, Mike Bridavsky, announced her death on social media yesterday with a post that celebrated her life and how Lil Bub left a huge mark on animal welfare and research for special needs pets. Mike noted that she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Her unexpected death on Sunday from a bone infection has led to many fans mourning her death. Having over more than two million followers on social media, and a mini-empire of commercial appearances elsewhere, Lil Bub was a familiar kitten to a huge number of people.
Mike Bridavsky, said on Instagram, "Dearest BUB, I will never forget your generosity, your limitless supply of love, or your uncanny ability to bring so much magic and joy to the world."
Bub was born as the runt of the litter and also had a form of feline dwarfism. Lil Bub’s genetic mutations gave her the unique features of looking like a permanent kitten and her toothless jaw left her tongue hanging out most of the time.
Bub has also been a subject for a genetic research campaign to help researchers get a better understanding of gene mutations and helped raise over $700,000 for animals in need through partnerships with organizations like the ASPCA.
Lib Bub was also among one of the first viral celebrity pets in the early 2010s, alongside pals like Grumpy Cat and Keyboard Cat. Apart from her many, many media appearances, she has also been the subject of a Vice Media-produced documentary called Lil Bub & Friendz.
Not only a documentary, but Lil Bub has also had a stint in music industry appearing in a track alongside Snoop Dogg on Meow the Jewels, a cat-sound remix album of Run the Jewels 2. She also has her own album called Science & Magic: A Soundtrack to the Universe.
There is no doubting that Lil Bub has brought immense amount of joy and love to the internet from the moment she was born. Her photo first went viral on Tumblr, and since then, she made the front page of Reddit, and she became so popular that her owner began selling Lil Bub merchandise like plushies, T-shirts, and calendars with her face on them.
Mike has also said that the majority of the earnings from Lil Bub merchandise have gone to animal rescue groups and adoption centers.
In his parting message to his Lil Bub, Mike wrote, "I am forever honored and humbled that you chose me as your caretaker. Please visit all of us in our dreams often. GOOD JOB BUB.”
