The greatest Christmas Netflix movie is finally getting a sequel and Chris Columbus, who directed Home Alone and Harry Potter, is coming to direct!
Christmas enthusiasts and lovers of Kurt Russell, your prayers have been heard! The greatest Netflix Christmas movie aka The Christmas Chronicles is finally getting a sequel and we are beyond thrilled!
Not that the news comes as a total surprise, given the movie was a major MAJOR hit but lately, the streaming giant has been axing popular movie titles and shows so we were not all that sure but we are super glad it is happening!
According to Discussing Movie, the Netflix blockbuster is returning with a sequel and Kurt Russell is coming to reprise his role as the father of Christmas or should we say, Daddy Christmas?
And, to hype you MORE for the movie, let us tell you that Chris Columbus - the legendary man behind Home Alone movies, Harry Potter movies, Mrs. Doubtfire, Gremlins, Jingle All The Way, and many other classic gems, is going to direct the sequel for Netflix! Chris served as a producer for the original Christmas Chronicles.
The production of the movie is reportedly starting this September and the movie Christmas Chronicles 2 is expected to release Christmas 2020. However, Netflix is yet to officially announce the release date of the movie. Released on November 22, the original movie was so loved by everybody that it immediately found its way to people's 'must-watch' list.
Not only that, apparently people loved the movie to such an extent that they just couldn't get enough of it and watched it over and over, making the movie one of the most-streamed movies in the history of Netflix! In just a mere week, The Christmas Chronicles was watched by more than 20 million people!
People absolutely loved Kurt Russell as Santa, which was one of the major reasons behind the movie's success, the direction and the movie plot being the others. Directed by Clay Kaytis, the Christmas movie took Netflix by storm and even the ones who watched it once, couldn't help but watch it again with their families and spread the Christmas joy!
Netflix's Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, announced that the movie is going crazy viral. “Even in his successful career, [Kurt Russell] has never had that many people see one of his movies in the first week ever,” Sarandos said at UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Monday (December, 3), as reported by Independent. “That’s a testimony to what we can bring to the market for storytellers today that we couldn’t have ten years ago.”
Sarandos also equated that if each view were to count as a ticket, the movie opened with a grand $200 million in its first week. “Even movies that go on to $1 billion don’t typically do that in the first week," Ted revealed.
The movie, no doubt, was a clear hit but we are not so sure if the math Sarandos did here is correct and if the success of Netflix exclusive movies can be compared with the movies who compete at the BoxOffice but we are definitely rooting for a sequel! Will you be watching?
