The franchise's original producer, Neal H Mortiz, announced the news after he renewed a new contract deal with Sony Pictures Television. Mortiz is keen on reviving the franchise for the streaming platform generation, which for all instances and purposes could replace the traditional TV viewing audience for shows and series'. Deadline also confirmed that John Wick 3's screenwriter Shay Hatten will write the pilot episode.

“We are elated to be continuing our partnership with Neal and Pavun [Shetty]. They are among the most esteemed and prolific producers in all of television and we have enjoyed much success together,” SPT President Jeff Frost said. “Their taste and producing acumen is beyond compare and we look forward to continued mutual prosperity together.”

Mortiz himself had a few words to say about the announcement. “The company’s current development slate includes I Know What You Did Last Summer at Amazon, a YA horror series based on the Moritz-produced hit movie franchise, with James Wan attached to direct and Shay Hatten writing,” he revealed.
The original movie came out in the year 1997, with an ensemble cast that included Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr, Ryan Phillippe, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Jim Gillespie directed that one, which was written by Scream writer Kevin Williamson, and it showed a group of teenagers (duh) stalked by the mysterious villain known as 'The Fisherman'. The movie was made on just a $17 million budget and went on to gross nearly 10 times that amount which helped it generate two sequels. The cast from the original movie returned for 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' the very next year before the series brought in some fresh blood for 'I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer' released in 2006.

There have been no details about any of the cast just yet, but we're super excited that James Wan is overseeing the series. His involvement is sure to make this a thrilling affair. Who knows, maybe he might even add some of his action from Fast & Furious 7 combined with the shocking elements of his Conjuring work to the TV adaptation.
