Family members knew of Wagner's love for his horse but they were shocked to see the horse whinnie and sigh at his funeral
Wagner de Lima Figueiredo’s funeral was a painful affair for his family and friends, but it was just as, if not more painful for his beloved horse, Sereno. Wagner’s horse, a white stallion, shocked everyone as it rested its head against Wagner’s coffin and whinnied. Sereno whined and stomped its feet throughout the funeral, appearing to be aware of the rituals and the apparent death of his owner. Wagner died in a motorcycle accident on New Year’s Day after he lost control of his bike while riding along beachfront in Brazil, as per a report by Metro News.
Wagner was rushed to the hospital after the accident. Despite undergoing two critical operations, the doctors couldn’t save the cowboy. The family arranged for his funeral to be held on January 3 in Paraiba, North East Brazil. Wagner was a semi-professional cowboy and had performed in rodeo shows for eight years with Sereno. The duo won countless tournaments and prizes and shared a very close bond. They were so close that the family felt Sereno deserved to say goodbye to Wagner. Wando de Lima, Wagner’s brother, took Sereno to the funeral. “This horse was everything to Wagner, it was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye, said Wando.
people definitely do not give #horses enough credit, they feel emotions 💖— XiXi Davey (@xhertx) January 5, 2017
Even leading up to the cemetery, Sereno was found whimpering and stomping his feet on the ground. Francielio Limiera, a close family friend said, “It was an unbelievable thing to see the way the horse behaved. If I hadn’t been there I wouldn’t have believed it myself. As we brought the coffin out at the beginning of the funeral, Sereno sounded like he was crying and as if he recognized that his owner was finally leaving him. He pounded the ground with his hooves and kept on whinnying. It was very sad,” said the family friend.
If the crowd was already astonished that a horse could comprehend what was going on, they were shocked beyond belief as they watched Sereno lay his head on the coffin and whinnied like he was grieving for his owner. The heartbreaking moment was captured on video and has gone viral. “Wagner’s life was this horse. He had a passion and a great love for him,” said Wando. “Sometimes he would even stop buying things for himself to make sure he could afford to buy horse feed.”

Wando said that countless people had offered to buy the horse off him but Wagner “always refused to sell him.” Wando has vowed to take care of the Sereno. “Wagner will stay with our family forever.”
Marcelo Servos, a veterinarian with the Brazilian Horse Riding Federation, isn’t too surprised at the news and says it's common for the horse to mourn a loved one’s death. “I’ve seen more fantastic stories than this and I’m sure this can happen. I do not say it happened specifically in this case, but it is possible,’ said Marcelo Servos, who has been caring for horses for over 20 years.
Social media users were moved by the video of the horse crying for its owner. One user wrote plainly: Animals have feelings, too. Another wrote: When my horse died, her son was terribly distraught like this. He cried for days and it made me cry alongside him. He whinnied just like this, raising his head. I have found that our horses are very intelligent.
