Garbage Pail Kids that came to us as a parody for the famous Cabbage Patch Kids were a hit in the 80s and Topps, the trading cards company has huge plans in store for celebrating 35 years of the gory kids.
They came to disgust us in the '80s and the Garbage Pail Kids have continued to do so for three decades. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Garbage Pail Kids sticker trading cards that took the world by storm. The kids have stayed with us in creative ways so far and for celebrating 35 years with them, Monopoly is teaming up with Topps to bring to us Garbage Pail Kids themed Monopoly.
Go Directly into the Toilet: 35th Anniversary “Garbage Pail Kids” Monopoly Game Coming Soon! https://t.co/87Wj3oJRC1— Bloody Disgusting (@BDisgusting) 13 January 2020
According to the statement by Monopoly, the new version of their game will help us relive the totally awesome '80s. The cards that came to us as a parody for the famous Cabbage Patch Kids have carved a place for itself. Cabbage Patch Kids are toys that have a vinyl head with fabric bodies that were all the rage in the 80s. It was then that Topps, the company well known for making sports trading cards decided to produce the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. The illustration was done by Art Spiegelman, best known for his Pulitzer winning graphic novel, Maus.
The Garbage Pail Kids version of Monopoly is also going to feature the signature artwork from the classic card collection with custom illustrations for a new generation of fans. The box art was illustrated by Joe Simko, a New York-based illustrator who released a documentary on the Garbage Pail Kids titled, "30 Years of Garbage: The Garbage Pail Kids Story."
The new game comes with six "GPK" tokens and probably has a "Go Directly into the Toilet" instead of the "Go Straight to Jail" card to keep with the gross aesthetic.
In 2020, you can expect a lot more Garbage Pail Kids themed merchandise since Topps is preparing a big celebration for the 35th anniversary. These cards feature kids with a punny abnormality, who are going through terrible and often disgusting suffering. They have characters like, Adam Bomb, Bony Tony, Drippy Dan, and Slobby Robbie that would be delightful if it wasn't so disgusting but is still pretty hilarious if you have a sense of humor that is that dark. After a short hiatus, the cards were reintroduced in 2003 and has been going steady since.
People on social media are excited to see this product and can't wait to buy it when it's finally released. Facebook user, Niki Lorelei tagged a friend in her comment and said, "I pretty sure I remember you having a collection of the cards. This would be an awesome game night option!" Another user, Chad Carter said, "I HATE monopoly. But I WANT this." Eric Fluderer, another Facebook user said, "That's awesome!!! I want it!! I want it!! I want it!!" And it sure looks like a lot of people are eagerly waiting for the gory kids.
