While we are totally loving Chinese actress Yifei Liu as Hua Mulan, the absence of Mushu and singing is deeply felt.
She's here! Our favorite Chinese warrior is here and she looks as badass as ever in the live-action trailer. Packed with incredible details, themes and Yifei Liu totally killing it as Hua Mulan, the trailer is pretty much what we dreamt of, but of course, without Mushu, Li Shang, and a lot of singing. In the short clip, we see Mulan riding a horse, her family telling her to get married, and she being a goddess warrior showing off some serious sword skills.
'When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father,' reads the official premise of the movie.
The cast of the live-action remake of the 1998 movie we all LOVE includes Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. Yes, there is going to be no Mushu or Li Shang in the movie. Instead, there are rumors that the dragon will be replaced by a phoenix and Li Shang's character will be totally replaced.
The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.” The live-action remake was actually announced in 2015 but since it is one of the hardest and expensive movies Disney has worked on, it took some sweet time to be ready. Initially, the movie was scheduled to release in 2018 but they had to make some changes.
Live-action Mulan is now aiming to release on March 27, 2020, probably to avoid competing with other live action movies releasing this year, mark your calendars. As per the old songs from the original movie like Reflection and I'll Make a Man Out of You, if you're a fan, I have some bad news...The director has revealed that the new movie will not include the music from the classic and received major backlash from the people. The live-action will have music but only melodies, no actual singing.
The live-action #Mulan trailer looks really good. But no Mushu? No Li Shang or any of the songs? I'm not sure.— TxG (@tadeexgerald) July 7, 2019
Live action Mulan's movie doesn't have Mushu, no Li Shang, no Shang Yu, and no songs, very disappointed, don't want to watch😑...— 澈(Che)🏳️🌈 (@cyanwhisky) July 7, 2019
Fans of Mulan are both excited and disappointed but then again, let's face it. When the movie comes out, we ALL will be rushing to get tickets because Mulan IS MULAN after all. "I really believe that Mulan was one of the first Disney princesses - I mean, she really wasn't a Disney princess if you think about it," Ming Na Wen expressed her love for Mulan. "She was just a girl in a village and she became a woman warrior. Which is also the trend, I think, of Disney princesses at the time. They were more or less damsels in distress. And it was really wonderful to have a character that was able to not need a man to save her - in fact, she saved the guy - and came into her own discovery of what her self worth is and what she was capable of doing."
