Anne Hathaway has some very big shoes to fill as she will be portraying the Grand High Witch in 'The Witches' reboot.
While some argue that Hollywood should leave classics alone and not attempt to repackage something that's already perfect, others are all about reimagining popular tales with new faces. It ultimately comes down to how well Tinseltown pulls off the reboot—something the industry has a very poor track record of—it's undeniable that remakes get people talking. Ever since news of Warner Bros reviving the cult favorite The Witches first came out, horror fanatics have kept their eyes and ears open for any and all chatter about it. Today we're going to quickly run you through everything we know.
As a true horror classics fan would already know, Hollywood first came out with a movie adaptation of fantasy suspense writer Roald Dahl's The Witches in 1990. Directed by Nicolas Roeg, who spearheaded the likes of The Man Who Fell To Earth, the film boasted of a stellar cast featuring Anjelica Huston, Mai Zetterling, and Rowan Atkinson. Despite having all the ingredients for a Box Office hit, the movie could only cash in a disappointing $15.3 million. The underwhelming reception was perhaps explained by Dahl and his fans disapproving of the filmmakers' choice to change the original ending and drift away from the book.
Now, almost 30 years later, Warner Bros is taking another shot at getting The Witches right and this time, the studio has enlisted the help of Forest Gump and Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis. According to Variety, Zemeckis is confirmed to co-write the script alongside Kenya Barris (creator of Black-ish) in addition to taking on the role of producer alongside partner Jack Rapke, Alfonso Cuaron, and Guillermo del Toro.
Anne Hathaway has some very big shoes to fill as she will be portraying the Grand High Witch in the upcoming film. Originally played by the icon Anjelica Huston, it won't be easy for the Ocean's 8 actress to strike the same level of fear in children. Meanwhile, the studio has also managed to rope in the Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer for an important role in The Witches reboot. As you might know, the plot follows a 7-year-old boy (Luke) and his grandmother who learn that the Grand High Witch is plotting to eliminate all the children of England. In the upcoming remake, Spencer is set to portray Luke's grandmother.
The cast also includes Hathaway's former Devil Wears Prada co-star Stanley Tucci according to Deadline. Fresh faces Jahzir Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick are also expected to star in The Witches reboot. Speaking of the cast, how does the OG castmember Huston feel about the remake? Apparently not too happy. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in August 2018, she said, "I don’t really know why because I think Nick Roeg made the ultimate 'Witches.' Frankly, best of luck to them. I hope it works. I just can’t imagine anyone trying to remake that particular [film]. Maybe it’s a good idea for this generation."
Contrary to the 1990 movie adaptation, sources close to the project say the upcoming reboot will stay rooted in the original source material. "We’re going to set it in the Gothic South in the 1960s. It’s an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of witch story," Zemeckis previously revealed.
According to Deadline, The Witches reboot will be out on October 16, 2020. Mark your calendars, folks!
