Discarding the rumors of Zendaya playing mermaid in the movie, Disney has picked Halle Bailey to portray Ariel and the internet is not so happy.
Looks like Disney has finally found its lead for the highly anticipated live-action remake of the old classic we all grew up watching! The Little Mermaid, the 1989 movie, based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, is next up on Disney's list of remaking animated movies and the studio just unveiled the cast.
According to Variety, singer Halle Bailey from Chloe x Halle has been tapped by Disney to play Ariel in the live-action movie, opposed to a redhead, and the internet is freaking out.
Reportedly, director Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) spent a LOT of time to find the perfect Ariel and finally decided to cast the R&B singer as the lead.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
The casting news, however, is not getting well received by longtime fans of Ariel and Disney is receiving major backlash for their choices. People are claiming that the political correctness is getting out of hand and people should stick to how the princesses were created originally.
'Obviously that's what's happening but it's not gonna change my perception of this whole situation. I'm not racist, don't get me wrong. But I think Tiana should be black-skinned, Mulan should be Asian and Ariel should be white. They've got the diversity in the classics, I think,' tweeted a person.
'it’s not the classic Ariel tho.. you can’t completely alter a classic look.. this fake woke shit boring af, it’s controversial for all the wrong reasons.. wanna be woke? then make more black princesses.. they prolly aren’t even gonna give her the red hair.. rlly tragic #notracist,' added another.
They cast a black girl to play Ariel in the remake?— anon. (@_Renskay) July 3, 2019
What's wrong with her being a ginger?
I promise I'm not being racist but The Little Mermaid is from Denmark. Just wished Disney got a red head. Favorite princess ko pa naman :(((( #TheLittleMermaid 🧜🏼♀️— Rue Bennett (@melodyjotiz) July 4, 2019
Isn’t Ariel a white red head...??! Disney has been pretty spot of with casting in all their other live action movies but may have dropped the ball. When Hollywood casts a white person to play a ethnic role ppl get pissed so why not with this? #disney #LittleMermaid #Ariel— Derek (@DerekWilliams82) July 4, 2019
Other actors who will be playing parts in the movie are Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. Comedian and writer Melissa McCarthy, famous for Life of the Party, Identity Thief, and Bridesmaids has been approached by Disney to play the role of the iconic villain Ursula.
The deal is still in early talks but we can already see Melissa nailing the character. She's the perfect fit! It was previously floating around the internet that Lady Gaga would play the role.
Rob Marshall, who very successfully managed to bring back the magic to Mary Poppins Returns, is now working on resurrecting Ariel and we have high hopes.
Plus, to the joy of longtime fans of the old movie, the remake will too feature old original songs along with the new ones. Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda are working on new tunes for the live-action movie.
Rob Marshall is also producing the remake along with Miranda, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca. Academy Award-nominated celebrated screenwriter behind Life of Pi, Finding Neverland, and The Chronicles of Narnia, David Magee is the scribe so you know, your favorite Disney princess movie is in right hands.
The original movie cashed in $233 million worldwide back in the day, the new one will definitely set a new record. Do you think Disney is taking the diversity thing too far or is Bailey perfect for Ariel? What do you think about a black Ariel?
You ever notice how odd it is that whenever they replace the source material with a black actor, it’s always a ginger character they replace? (Not saying it’s bad, but with the little mermaid remake happening, it’s interesting that they always change red heads/gingers)— artie (@enamouredbyhim) July 3, 2019
Disney just casted Ariel for the live action remake of the Little Mermaid and she looks nothing like the original. At least casted someone that looks like Ariel. She is not even a red head. What are you going to do? Have here wear a red wig or CGI hair?— Cobra: King Of Snakes (@GreenCobrasG) July 4, 2019
Here is my problem with the #LittleMermaid casting— Akash Khurana (@Akash_Cornetto) July 4, 2019
Little white girls, if they want to dress up as #Ariel will now be shamed by the same people who shamed them when they dressed as Moana. Imagine they now can't dress up as a character that was a white red head in the first place.
Dear Disney, what is going on? Did you lose your touch? Stop making live actions. Many people are disappointed already, no Mushu, No Shang, no musicals and no red head for the little mermaid. As a Disney freak I am sad to the core. Aladdin was amazing but now...dishonor is coming— Ms.CreepyPasta (@MsCreepy_Pasta) July 3, 2019
