'Scream 5' Is Officially Happening And David Arquette Is Returning As Dewey Riley

Arquette said he is thrilled to be playing Dewey again and he is also looking forward to reuniting with his Scream family.

Scream 5 is happening and our favorite David Arquette will reprise his role as Dewey Riley, reported Deadline. For a long time, there have been a lot of rumors regarding a fifth movie in the slasher franchise. Back in 2015, Wes Craven, who directed the first four movies, had passed away and that made the fans question the future of the franchise. In March 2020, it was announced that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Ready or Not fame will be helming the fifth movie of the franchise.

Arquette said, "I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new. Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.” Along with the new movie, Spyglass Media Group is relaunching the 24-year-old franchise, and similar to Arquette, we are also thrilled about his return.

Spyglass has reported that they are in talks and are trying their best to bring back OG cast members to be a part of the fifth installment. The production of the movie will begin later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina with all safety protocols in place. While the details of the movie are being kept tightly under the wraps, Scream 5 is going to be an original story co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busic. The movie will be produced by Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak. Kevin Williamson will serve as an executive producer along with Chad Villella.

The first Scream movie released in 1996 and Neve Campbell starred as Sidney Prescott, the target of the Ghostface killer. Did you know Ghostface was actually inspired by the Edvard Munch painting The Scream? Courteney Cox and David Arquette starred in four movies which were directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. In an interview with Business Standard, Williamson said, "I'm excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next Scream'. Their take on the movie is both original, inventive, and honors Wes' legacy in a wonderful way. Ready or Not' was my favorite horror film of last year and I can't wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the Scream' universe. I'm thrilled to be a part of it."

The original movie follows the story of Sidney Prescott, a high school student who becomes the target of a mysterious serial killer going by the name Ghostface. The movie was inspired by the real-life case of Gainesville Ripper and many say that the franchise remains a symbol of Williamson's passion for horror films. The movie is credited to revive the horror genre during the 1990s. Upon its release, the movie raked $6,354,586 in its opening weekend.

The first Scream movie remains the most successful movie in the entire franchise and received a largely positive response. Are you excited about Scream 5? Let us know in the comments below.
