The much-awaited sequel will reportedly focus on Prince Akeem as he "learns about a long lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda."
Most people loved Arsenio Hall as the beloved late-night talk show host of The Arsenio Hall Show but there is another section of fanbase who loved him for his acting chops, especially for playing the iconic role of Semmi, the right-hand man of Prince Akeem in 1988 blockbuster “Coming To America.”
And now, Hall has officially confirmed reprising his role in the much-awaited sequel of the iconic comedy movie, as reported by Deadline. He even took to Twitter to say that he was officially on board for the project.
Although there had been several rumors surrounding his return with his longtime friend Eddie Murphy, the news was never officially confirmed. However, it has now been officially confirmed and we can't keep calm!
The news of the sequel happening was earlier teased by costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who had won an Oscar for her work on Black Panther. She took to Instagram and shared a photo writing, "GOOD MORNING MY NEIGHBORS! It’s official! Preliminary fitting for Coming to America 2 with Prince Akeem, Semmi and Oscar."
The upcoming sequel will focus on Prince Akeem as he "learns about a long lost son and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda." Although not many details have been revealed about the movie, Murphy is set to produce with Kevin Misher, while Barris will serve as an executive producer. 'Coming To America 2' is said to hit the cinema halls in December 2020.
James Earl Jones will also reprise his role of King Joffe and joining him alongside is none other than Shari Headley. However, fans have been eagerly speculating whether we will get to see Cuba Gooding Jr. playing the iconic cameo of a man getting his hair cut this time.
Now if you don't recall the first movie, here is the official synopsis of the 1988 blockbuster: "Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) is the prince of a wealthy African country and wants for nothing, except a wife who will love him in spite of his title. To escape an arranged marriage, Akeem flees to America accompanied by his persnickety sidekick, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), to find his queen."
"Disguised as a foreign student working in fast food, he romances Lisa (Shari Headley) but struggles with revealing his true identity to her and his marital intentions to his king father (James Earl Jones)," it concluded.
As much as fans continue to eagerly await for the movie to hit the screens, actor and comedian Joe Piscopo has also joined in on the bandwagon. In an earlier interview, he heaped praises on the legendary comedian Murphy and believes that the sequel has all the ingredients to become a blockbuster at the box office.
“Eddie Murphy and again, I can’t be objective because I love him like a brother,” Piscopo said during an interview on FOX Business’ “Cavuto: Coast-to-Coast” on Tuesday. “Not before or since, has there been a more comic genius. Eddie would let me shine."
Piscopo also spoke about Murphy when he was asked whether the star comedian was a scene-stealer. “I said, ‘what am I doing with this brilliant guy?’ He’d step back and we would go back, we would go forth, ‘You are black, and I am white. You are blind as a bat.’”
