Netflix Confirms 'Chicken Run' Is Getting A Sequel After 20 Years

The original movie starred Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha as imprisoned chickens trying to escape a farm.

Back in 2018, a Chicken Run sequel was confirmed, but until now, we barely had any details about the project. Luckily for us, on the original movie's 20th anniversary, Aardman Animations announced that they had partnered with Netflix for a sequel movie, reported Independent. The movie will release globally except in China. The original movie starred Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha as imprisoned chickens trying to escape a farm. The production of the movie is set to begin next year.

Peter Lord, Aardman co-founder and creative director released a statement saying, "Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of Chicken Run so we're delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we've found the perfect story. Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project too: they celebrate the film-maker, which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience."

The sequel was also confirmed by Peter Lord, who co-directed the original Chicken Run with Nick Park.

Lord said, "We’ve discussed it so many times over the years and come up with various ideas but never quite found one we loved enough. But it was always in the back of our minds. We’ve got the perfect story, and the relationship with Netflix is kind of perfect as well because they celebrate the filmmaker and are so filmmaker friendly. I feel now we can make the Chicken Run sequel we want to, the one we really care about.

The official synopsis of the movie was also released along with the news. It reads, "Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy's farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger's happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland, the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they're breaking in!"

Sam Fell, who is going to direct the sequel provided more details, saying that the plot could be summed up as: “this time, they’re breaking in.” The movie supposedly begins with Ginger hatching an egg with Rocky in a human-free chicken utopia. But after their daughter Molly is born, the chickens face a new threat.

Fell said, "I tell you it will be fun and games seeing these chickens back in action. All the gadgets, the kit, we’re kind of moving towards an almost-tribute to Mission: Impossible with elements of a heist and how they’re going to pull off this amazing break-in.”

Aardman studio's last movie, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon began in 2017 and was released in September 2019. There has been no official news about the cast yet. Are you excited for the sequel? Let us know.
