The dog walker who found the tennis ball wrote: This ball containing a new razor blade inside was picked up by my dogs in the reeds adjacent to the Knott car park at the far end of Lyme Park at 6.00 pm 24th May. It has been doctored by someone who evidently has malevolent intentions towards dogs. The man had taken his puppies out for a walk in the Lyme Parkin Stockport when the incident occurred.

The police also issued a warning to dog walkers before launching an investigation into the incident. The dog walker said he found the blade after his puppies were chewing on the ball. The ball slowly gave way as the puppies chewed on them, to reveal brand new razor blades wedged inside. “My puppies carried it back to the car and chewed it up. We found this vicious razor blade inside. The pond life responsible may use poison or there may be more doctored balls in the vicinity,” said the man.

He was horrified to find the blade inside the tennis balls and had even played fetch with his puppies a little while before that: Please be vigilant. My dogs just found this old ball set in the reeds hidden for them to find. I even threw it for them! I can’t bear to think of the consequences.

The man confirmed that the police had been informed about the incident and an investigation was launched: The police and the rangers at Lyme have been informed and have assigned an incident number. He also urged other walkers to report similar cases if they came across any. “We are aware of an incident reported by a local dog walker. The matter is now being investigated by local police. We've informed our countryside team who will be carrying out additional checks whilst working in the wider estate,” said a spokeswoman for the National Trust, who run Lyme Park.

Social media was disgusted by the attempt to harm dogs and slammed the perpetrator saying it wasn’t the first time people were looking to harm dogs in such manner, “This is disgusting. Along with the increase in poisoned meat/bones being reported. What the hell is wrong with people that they would want to harm any dog especially in this disgusting barbaric way!! I really hope those responsible are caught."

Another user said she knew of dogs who had been hurt by similar acts, ‘It's happened elsewhere where I walk my dogs. I know at least 3 that have needed vets treatment including one of mine broken bottles pushed into the mud, baited balls - not heard about any with blades in yet but wouldn't surprise me."
