It's Official: 'The Witches' Is Getting A Reboot After 29 Years And Set For A Halloween Release!

The 1990 classic is being remade and according to Hathaway, the movie is going to be very different from the original.

Remember the movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic The Witches? Yes, the one which terrified us as children is getting a revival after a span of 29 years! Starring some of the biggest names - Anjelica Huston, who gained fame for playing Morticia Addams in the Addams Family, Mai Zetterling of Shadow of the Sun, Rowan Atkinson the man we love as Johnny English and Mister Bean, and Jasen Fisher, directed by Nicolas Roeg, The Witches was released in 1990 and even though it became a cult classic, it's performance at the box office didn't match its potential.

"Why?" Probably because the movie didn't do justice to Dahl's original story. The fantasy suspense writer who wrote multiple twisted and extremely weird yet lovable books and sold more than 250 million copies in his time called out the movie himself for messing up with the original plot and his fans tagged along. The movie has a different ending from how Roald described the events in his book.

Produced by Jim Henson Productions for Lorimar Film Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros, the movie could only earn $15.3 million. "A young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse," read the premise of the original movie and it looks like Hollywood is all set to rectify the mistakes it earlier committed. The Witches is getting a reboot and hopefully this time the story will stick to Dahl's words.

The Witches is a movie which revolves around a boy and his grandmother who learn that the Grand High Witch is plotting to eliminate all the children of England. Robert Zemeckis, one of the highest grossing directors in the world, has been hired by WB to direct the reboot. Alfonso Cuaron of Roma and Gravity and The Shape of Water's Guillermo del Toro are also a part of the project and will be producing the highly anticipated reboot and guess what? The production has already begun.

“We’re going to set it in the Gothic South in the 1960s. It’s an exciting way to put a sociological spin on this kind of witch story," Robert told the Playlist. As far as the cast is concerned, it is studded with some of the biggest stars, too. Anne Hathaway, known for always playing positive roles, who gained fame after playing the lead actress in The Princess Diaries, is playing the titular role and will be filling the shoes of Anjelica Huston as Grand High Witch.

In a recent interview with Variety, Anne revealed that the reboot will be different from the original movie and the only similarity between them is the story. "I think the stories will be the only thing that is familiar," Hathaway said. "I think everything else is totally from the mind of Robert Zemeckis and I'm really excited." While fans of Anne are beyond thrilled, people who love the original movie are highly doubting if she'll be able to pull off the iconic role.

And who's opposite her? The Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer. The 46-year-old will be playing the role of the young boy's grandmother. Newbies Jahzir Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick are also believed to be a part of the star cast. Kenya Barris is co-writing the script for the movie. Will you be catching this reboot of The Witches adorned with stars? Mark your calendars for 16th October 2020!
