The musical remake will be a retelling of Charles Dickens’ seasonal classic and we have all the details you need to know.
It looks like Christmas will be coming early as Bill Condon is developing a musical based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds will be starring in the musical but we don't know the exact nature of their roles yet. Some sources have confirmed that the screenplay will be written by John Morris and the musical will be directed by Sean Anders. Oscar-winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz will be writing the music for the film. He has won Oscars for original song and original score for Pocahontas, and original song for The Prince of Egypt.
There is no doubt that A Christmas Carol is a classic holiday novella and it has been adapted many times for the big screen, including Disney's 2009 motion capture movie that was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Jim Carrey as Scrooge. The original story by Dickens was published in 1843 and follows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is an old miser who gets a visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley, along with the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Scrooge is taught a lesson by every ghost which eventually made him a kinder man and helped him embrace the true meaning of Christmas.
According to a report by Variety, Apple won the rights for the live-action musical remake. Big names of Hollywood like Danny DeVito, Bill Murray, and Jim Carrey have played Scrooge in the past. For now, there is no confirmation who is playing what role in the upcoming musical. A Christmas Carol musical remake is being produced by Ferrell’s Gloria Sanchez banner and Reynolds’ company Maximum Effort and Mosaic.
There is no doubt that it is going to be a tough task for the director to recreate the same magic that was portrayed in the earlier A Christmas Carol adaptation. Condon has won an Oscar for writing Gods and Monsters and was nominated for the movie adaptation of the musical Chicago. Condon previously directed Dreamgirls and the final two Twilight movies. His Beauty and the Beast remake earned more than $1.2 billion at the box office. In 2019, he also directed The Good Liar starring Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren.
